Democracy is at the heart of what the EU is about. It gives a voice to all, facilitates equality, safeguards our freedoms ... The European Union is founded on democratic values and governed by representative democracy. We elect representatives to the European Parliament who defend our interests in discussions and debates on how the EU should work for us. The European Council and the Council of the European Union are formed with the representatives of the governments we vote back home. We have a say in other ways too with the ‘European Citizens Initiative’, the European Citizens’ Panels and the ‘Have Your Say’ website. The EU is dedicated to preserving democracy, rising to the challenge of increased geopolitical tensions and threats posed by disinformation. The European Democracy Action Plan is the centrepiece. For us to engage in open and democratic debate, we need to be well-informed through trustworthy information. We are doing this in the EU institutions, providing clear information on what the EU does and means, and in the 24 EU official languages. We are proud to do this every day at the Publications Office of the European Union, through op.europa.eu. With #EUElections2024 fast approaching, we want to give you good reads all about European democracy ... We cannot take it for granted! https://europa.eu/!7Mg9GH ..................................... 20 years since the EU’s historic enlargement #OnThisDay in 2004. 20 years strengthening relationships and building together peace, prosperity and stability within the EU. #20YearsTogether, #StrongerTogether!
Today, we are celebrating 20 years since the great EU enlargement! 🎉 On 1 May 2004, the citizens of 🇨🇾 🇨🇿 🇪🇪 🇭🇺 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 🇲🇹 🇵🇱 🇸🇰 🇸🇮 became citizens of the EU. Since then, we have witnessed growth and prosperity. Real wages have doubled from 2004 to 2023 in these ten countries, while poverty levels have halved. The 27 EU nations have strengthened their ties through modern infrastructure, bolstered by EU investments and funds. And we've witnessed numerous instances of #EUsolidarity during natural disasters or medical emergencies, as EU countries have rallied to support one another through the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism. Zoom into #TEDConf2024! 🔭🕵🏻♀️ Complaints from businesses who bid for government tenders can help to identify various issues, perhaps even corruption, in the way #PublicProcurement is done. If managed poorly and opaquely, such issues can also unnecessarily delay critical decisions and the hamper the implementation of contracts. In Albania, until 2021, suppliers who wanted to make complaints about government contracting procedures needed a lot of patience and had to spend extra money. At #TEDConf2024 Jonaid Myzyri will explain how the Public Procurement Commission of Albania has turned the situation around, increasing transparency by embracing technology. Register to listen to Jonaid and many other procurement professionals at #TEDConf2024: https://europa.eu/!xXXFBw Registrations close Sunday 23.59 CET! #TEDConf2024 'Public Procurement Data Superpowers: Transparency in public procurement - Harnessing artificial intelligence' 29 and 30 April 2024 ........................................................... Within the EU, 68% of citizens claim to come across what they perceive as misinformation of fake news once a week or more. People who encounter such content more frequently are also more likely to consider it a cause of concern for democracy. Read data story 👉 https://europa.eu/!fMxNYk #EUOpenData

Zoom into #TEDConf2024! 🔭🕵🏻♀️ For #PublicProcurement procedures to work well, contract award notices need to be duly completed. The updated eForms are an EU legislative open standard for publishing public procurement data. They are digital standard forms used by public buyers to publish notices on ted.europa.eu, Tenders Electronic Daily. Because the forms to complete are detailed, errors can arise if the correct data is not entered. This then has knock-on effects for data collection later. At #TEDConf2024, Petteri Pohto from Hansel Oy will explain how realtime help for contract publishers can be achieved after testing for all possible mistakes upstream. Very important knowledge-sharing! Register to listen to him and other procurement professionals at #TEDConf2024: https://europa.eu/!xXXFBw Just a few days left to register for following #TEDConf2024 online! #TEDConf2024 'Public Procurement Data Superpowers: Transparency in public procurement - Harnessing artificial intelligence' .........................................
